Growing Words provides sight word/high frequency word game kits to make learning fun. There are 6 kits. Each kit contains 20 words. There are 12 games in each kit. The games help learners to recognize and read the words, listen and find the words, write the words, and read them in a short sentence. The kits are for new readers 4-7 years old. They are also great for 7-9 year olds who need some more practice to master these words. All 120 words can be found in the first 183 Fry’s Words.
Why I started the Business
While working with struggling readers in a public school, I spent most of my day working on phonics skills with children. The children I would work with would start to understand the phonics skill with individual words. I would have them try reading passages that contained the skill and many would get stuck on sight words/high frequency words and then almost every word turned into a struggle and they wanted to give up. I became frustrated that almost everything I could find to practice sights words were lists, flash cards, and bingo for a large amount of words. I started creating games to work on smaller amounts of words. The kids started participating and learning the words. As they learned their sight words, we could focus on mastering new phonics skills. These games have been created as a fun and interactive resource to help parents, teachers, tutors, and anyone who works with children on their journey to become a successful reader. We want all children to become good readers, so their confidence can grow and their dreams can become a reality!
My name is Kristen Bateman. I graduated from BYU with a BS in Family Science. I have worked as a social worker and love all aspects of family life. I especially love child development and helping children succeed. This led me to volunteer work as a literacy volunteer and foster parent while living in New York State. After moving from New York to Arizona, I decided to combine my love for literacy and children and started providing reading intervention to children in the public school system. During this time, I worked with many children that felt they could not learn to read. While working with them, I started creating and using games to get them to participate. It worked so well that I decided to create the company, Growing Words, and make the games available for everyone to use. I have been married for 25 years and have 4 amazing boys that are the joy of my life.
