Informed by my experience and second language acquisition research, my services include curriculum development in foreign language education, instructional design in Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL), professional development, and classes in Language for Specific Purposes (LSP).
Classes – I use a communicative approach to teach Spanish & English that values using the second language as a tool for instruction rather than focusing solely on achieving perfect linguistic accuracy. The emphasis is on the ability to communicate and interpret information effectively.
Consulting – I am an ESA-AZ vendor, providing services to private & charter schools, microschools, pods, and homeschoolers. I work with you to design a curriculum in Spanish or ESL, a single course, or a faculty development program.
Why I started the Business
I have co-authored textbook programs and taught English, Spanish, French, and German as foreign languages both in the United States and Spain. My background as a PreK-adult classroom teacher is complemented by my experience as an instructor in bilingual education, postbaccalaureate certification, and secondary methodology
After 49 years in teaching, I retired in 2020 as Professor emerita, Modern Languages & Cultures (Spanish) from the Virginia Military Institute. My classroom experience includes 11 years in the Tucson Unified School District (AZ), where I taught middle school and high school Spanish, ESL, and French. Prior to this, I owned an English language school in Sevilla, Spain.
My pedagogical background includes Project-Based Learning (PBL), study abroad, Undergraduate Research, and alternative assessment, especially ePortfolios.
In addition to three c0-edited volumes of critical essays in Spanish, I have presented over fifty papers internationally on second language acquisition, pedagogical philosophy, and Spanish literature. I have also co-authored textbooks with Pearson School/Heinle, VHL, and Georgetown University Press. My latest publication, co-edited with Dr. D. Alexis Hart, Allegheny College, is open source: ePortfolios@edu. What We Know, What We Don’t Know, and Everything in Between.
