So here I am. I’ve written my first book… and then the panic set in. What’s next?Do I need an agent? Who will actually publish this thing? These were the questions I kept throwing at Google late at night. Let me tell you, that is a rabbit hole you don’t just walk into, you fall into it headfirst. There is so much information, so many opinions, and so many “industry standards” to consider. At times, the weight of it all made me want to give up. But I couldn’t. My fairies wouldn’t allow it.Learning on the Fly (Mistakes and All)The reality is, I don’t have a team. There’s no PR firm in front of me and no assistant behind me. I’m learning this as I go, making mistakes in real-time. But I’m in it now, and there is absolutely no turning back. When you don’t have a massive budget for professional editors and high-end illustrators, you have to get creative. I couldn’t afford expensive publishing conferences or “masterclasses” on my wages. So, I turned to the one place that felt accessible: Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).I taught myself how to put a book together from scratch. Was it easy? No. Were there mistakes? Plenty. But that is the process. After a few author copies and several “back to the drawing board” moments, I finally saw it. It was exactly what I wanted. The Launch… and the SilenceMy books went live in November 2023, (I published two at one time) just in time for Christmas. I was buzzing! Everyone loves fairies, right? This had to be the greatest thing ever. I did what everyone does: I hit social media. I posted, and I posted, and I posted. I got a few likes, a few “that’s awesome” comments, and a handful of sales. And then… crickets. Even with an audiobook version ready to go, the silence was deafening. The initial excitement from the world drifted away like a fart in the wind. I was left standing there with no marketing skills, no celebrity endorsements, and no big-name publishing house backing me up. Just little ol’ me.Thinking Outside the (Book) Box I realized I couldn’t just sit around and wait for the world to find me. I had no money for ads and no one to call for favors. I had to think of something, something that reflected the heart of the story I wrote. That’s when it hit me. If the world won’t come to the fairies, the fairies will go to the world.I’m going to dress as a fairy to deliver my book.If you’re going to be a self-published author, you have to be your own biggest fan, your own street team, and sometimes, your own magical creature. Amazon might have made the book available, but it’s the personal touch that’s going to make it fly.Stay tuned…it’s about to get sparkly.
