Confidence First, Competition Later: Our Secret to Keeping Kids in Sports

At Beginners Edge Sports Training (BEST), we believe youth sports should build kids up — not break them down. That’s why our core philosophy is simple but powerful:

Confidence first, competition later.

It’s more than just a slogan. It’s our proven approach to keeping kids active, engaged, and in love with the game for the long haul.

The Problem: Pressure Over Play

Too many youth sports programs rush into competition before young athletes are ready. They push kids into games before they’ve learned the basics. What’s supposed to be fun turns into frustration — and for a lot of kids, that’s where the journey ends.

At BEST, we do things differently. We start by making sure every child has the skills, knowledge, and confidence to play — before they ever compete.

Step One: Build Confidence

Confidence is the foundation. Before we introduce scoring, strategy, or team dynamics, we make sure kids:

  • Learn the fundamentals in a fun, supportive way
  • Are encouraged to try, fail, and try again
  • Get plenty of positive reinforcement
  • When kids feel successful, they stay motivated. That’s where real growth begins.

The BEST Roadmap:
Our Step-by-Step Path to Progress

To bring this philosophy to life, we created the BEST Roadmap — a clear path that introduces kids to sports the right way and prepares them to compete with confidence.

  1. Skills Classes

This is where it all starts. Our Skills Classes introduce all the fundamental techniques of the sport in a fun, structured, and age-appropriate format. It’s about learning, moving, and building confidence — no pressure, no stress.

  1. LBA – Little Ballers Associate

Once kids have a solid base, we introduce our LBA (Little Ballers Associate) program. Here, athletes begin to explore:

  • Real gameplay scenarios
  • Sport-specific terminology
  • Basic strategy and team dynamics
  • This stage bridges the gap between training and competition while keeping things playful and low-stakes.

  1. BEST Leagues (Coming Soon!)

The final step is our upcoming BEST Leagues, where kids apply everything they’ve learned in actual games. The focus remains on growth and sportsmanship, but with the excitement and structure of league play. We match skill levels and ensure every player has a chance to shine.

Why It Works

When competition is introduced too early, it can overwhelm kids and turn them away from sports altogether. When it’s introduced at the right time, it energizes them.

Our approach helps kids:

  • Stay active and involved in sports longer
  • Develop real skills they’re proud of
  • Build resilience, teamwork, and confidence
  • And most importantly — they have fun. They look forward to practices. They can’t wait to come back.

What Parents Should Look For

  • Not all sports programs are built the same. Ask yourself:
  • Are coaches focused on teaching, or just winning?
  • Is your child having fun and gaining confidence?
  • Is the environment positive, encouraging, and inclusive?
  • If not, it might be time to switch playbooks.

Confidence Is the Game-Changer

At BEST, we’re not chasing early trophies. We’re focused on helping every child discover what they’re capable of. Our roadmap gives them the tools to grow at their own pace — and love every step of the journey.

Confidence first. Competition later.
That’s our secret to keeping kids in sports — and helping them thrive on and off the field.
