Lindamood Bell’s Visualizing and Verbalizing program is designed to help improve language comprehension by building concept imagery. Students are taught how to create pictures or movies in their mind while reading.
The development of concept imagery improves reading and listening, comprehension, memory, oral vocabulary, critical thinking, and writing. It also develops understanding of the whole rather than parts. This is what leads to higher level thinking.
A student’s inability to picture what has been read is a common deficit that leads to difficulty comprehending even the most basic text. Similarly, a student may be able to picture one or two ideas from the passage, but lacks understanding of the whole, or gestalt. This impacts understanding and ability to answer more complex questions.
