Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental problem that results in distraction, forgetfulness, impulsivity, restless physical movement from fidgeting to pacing, and difficulty in performing executive functions. Medications for ADHD have been in short supply for over a year; however, the challenge continues to persist as parents struggle to find prescriptions.
“When two elephants fight, the grass suffers”, is an African Proverb that represents the consequences on families that the loggerhead between the Federal agencies and drug manufacturers regarding the regulation policies for the production of ADHD Medication is causing. Furthermore, an exponential increase in global demand for ADHD drugs has compounded the scarcity of ADHD Medication.
Here are some non-drug-related methods to cope with the shortage of ADHD medications:
Tutoring:
Tutoring can be an effective way to help children with ADHD manage their symptoms as the tutor can provide one-on-one attention, personalized instruction, and direct support in areas where the child might be struggling.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
Psychiatry Research showed that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for children and adults with ADHD and is no less effective than a combination of medications.
Improved sleep:
The ADHD brain works very hard all day to keep up with executive functions and the need to process, filter, and manage all the stimulations around them, so there is a need to ensure that your child gets adequate sleep and practices calming activities.
Balanced diet:
Ensuring your child gets a balanced diet has several benefits for managing symptoms of ADHD. A balanced diet, which includes foods rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein is essential for healthy living and brain development.
Exercise:
Regular exercise eases many ADHD symptoms and helps children improve focus, build stamina, boost their mood, and improve physical fitness.
In conclusion, the Child Mind Institute affirms that planning, flexibility, and creativity are the keys to success in dealing with the ongoing shortage of various ADHD medications. However, while the situation of the scarcity of ADHD medication eases, these non-drug-related methods can be immensely helpful for the growth of your child, especially, tutoring by a professional agency like ours.
